Deaf March is the musical moniker of Niko, a 25-year-old indie-folk artist born and raised in Chania, Greece and now based in Riga, Latvia. Rooted in a lifelong love of sound, she grew up surrounded by Greek traditional music and entehno, while rock, punk, and hip hop shaped the edge and emotional grit of her early musicianship. She studied and played music throughout her life, graduating from the Music Middle and High School before studying Musicology in Thessaloniki, where she began writing her own songs, quiet sketches that hinted at something deeper she had not yet learned to name. For years, she drifted between genres, searching for a musical language that felt honest. That moment arrived in the spring of 2025 when she finally uncovered her sonic home: intimate, melancholic indie folk marked by soft acoustic guitar lines, confessional lyrics, and subtle traces of electronic and post-influenced texture. Her influences span generations and geographies. Mac DeMarco’s hazy charm sits alongside the fragile sincerity of Elliott Smith and Nick Drake, while contemporary voices like Emma Harner, Hudson Freeman, and Jesse Welles shape her modern melancholia. Now writing from Riga, deaf march carves out a world of quiet intensity, with songs that feel like held breath, late-night windows, and the soft gravity of returning to yourself.
